Our April 2024 membership meeting (Lunch and Learn) will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at 11:30 am at the Iowa City Water Treatment Plant Meeting Room, at 80 Stephen Atkins Drive in Iowa City (this is just off Dubuque Street, north of I-80). PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE IN LOCATION FROM OUR NORMAL SPOT.
This month our meeting is being hosted by the City of Iowa City's Office of Equity and Human Rights.
Stefanie Bowers, the Human Rights Coordinator for the City of Iowa City, and Kristin Watson, the Human Rights Investigator for the City of Iowa City will be discussing the history and work of the IC Human Rights Commission.
The Human Rights Commission in Iowa City is tasked with:
- Disseminating information to educate the public on illegal discrimination and civil rights, such as organizing and facilitating educational public forums that address one or more of the broad range of topics included within the rubric of human rights
- Making recommendations to the City Council for such further legislation concerning discrimination as it may deem necessary and desirable
- Cooperating within the limits of any appropriations made for its operation with other agencies or organizations both public and private whose purposes are not inconsistent with those of Title 2 of the City Code (Human Rights Ordinance)
- Planning programs and activities designed to eliminate racial, religious, cultural and other intergroup tensions including but not limited to sex, color, creed, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, age and national origin.
Stefanie and Kristin will also be talking about Fair Housing and unique issues surrounding Emotional Support Animals in Iowa City.
A box lunch from Panera is being provide by our hosts at no cost to everyone who RSVPs by this Friday, April 19th at 3:00 pm.
