Our March 2024 membership meeting (Lunch and Learn) will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at 11:30 am at the Park Lodge at Terry Trueblood Recreation Center, at 579 McCollister Boulevard in Iowa City.  PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE IN LOCATION FROM OUR NORMAL SPOT.

Our speaker this month is Sarah Terlouw, the Executive Director for the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

The IRC works in more than 50 countries and in 28 U.S. cities to help people affected by humanitarian crises to survice, recover and rebuild their lives.  IRC’s staff, volunteers and community partners work together to empower refugees to restore their dignity and self-reliance and participate in their new communities.

Their programs are designed to ensure refugees thrive in communities across Iowa—whether ensuring children are enrolled in school, adults become self-reliant through employment or starting businesses, or families receive acute medical care they need to recover from trauma or illness. The IRC helps those in need to rebuild their lives and regain control of their future in their new home community.

Programs of interest to Landlords include:

  • Reception and Placement: Meeting critical needs in the early months after arriving in the United States.  IRC staff and community partners ensure newly arrived refugees are greeted at the airport; have a furnished home; receive time-limited rental assistance; have access to nutritious food, healthcare and education; and are given appropriate social services referrals.
  • Employment Services: Early self-sufficiency through employment is the foundation of the US Refugee Program.  IRC staff and volunteers provide job readiness training, vocational counseling, resume preparation, job search and placement services, and financial assistance for basic needs with the goal of helping refugees find their first job in America.  Employment services are provided to refugees for up to five years from their date of arrival.

You can find out more about IRC at their website here - https://www.rescue.org/

Lunch is being catered by Catering by Charlotte, who is going to be our primary food provider for our lunch and learns for the this year.  Catering by Charlotte will be offering a rotating selection of lunch items for each meeting.

Please RSVP by Friday,  March 22, 2024 at 5pm either at the GICAA website or to apartmentassoc@gmail.com with the number of individuals from your organization who will be attending.  Price is $15.00 for lunch in person (cash or check) or $15.50 if you pay online when you register (to cover the online payment fee from our website payment processor).
